Kaustinen is a small municipality of about 4,000 residents in Central Ostrobothnia with plenty of companies and jobs in various fields of business. The main language spoken in Kaustinen is Finnish, but many Finns also know how to speak English and Swedish, which are taught to everyone as part of the mandatory basic education.

Kaustinen is an active and lively municipality of culture and sports and we offer a wide range of different sorts of freetime activities. Kaustinen is famous for the long roots in folk music and folk dance and the Kaustinen fiddle playing and related practices and expressions was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021.

Integration coordinator

The municipality has an integration coordinator who you can contact with any questions. You can set up an appointment so that the coordinator can reserve a remote interpreter in advance to ensure smooth service access. The integration coordinator can provide advice and assistance in matters related to housing, day-to-day living and integration services. The coordinator can also help find an early childhood education place for your children or register your child for school.

Services in Kaustinen

Kaustinen has three grocery stores, S-Market, K-Market and HalpaHalli. In Finland, groceries are slightly more expensive than elsewhere in Europe, but it is a good idea to compare the prices of different brands – the differences can be substantial. A pharmacy that sells self-care products, over-the-counter medication and prescription medication is located close by the premises of Osuuspankki (Kaustintie 3). There is also Säästöpankki office in Kaustinen located on the opposite side of the street from Osuuspankki premises. Cash machine for withdrawal of cash can be found outside of S-Market and in the premises of K-Market. The official currency of Finland is the euro (€). The withdrawal fee will depend on your bank and account agreements.

The Kaustinen town hall features a service point that provides free access to a computer and the Internet. You can also ask for assistance at the help desk and print documents. Printing documents related to aid applications is free of charge. At the service poin, you can file applications and initiate matters related to the following authorities: Kela (The Social Insurance Institution of Finland), Finnish Tax Administration, Digital and Population Data Services Agency  and public employment services. The municipal library also has public computers that are free to use.

Leisure in Kaustinen


At the Kaustinen municipal library, you can get a library card that will enable you to borrow books, magazines, films and recreational equipment for free. You can also request the library to order materials in your own language! The self-service library is open daily from 7AM to 10PM. 

A movie theater Kino Kaustinen operates on Pajalantie 19. Movies are shown  from Thursday to Sunday. The foreign movies in Finland are texted in Finnish so you can still hear the original language spoken in the movie. 

Kaustinen is a home of associations which provide all sorts of freetime activities from folk dance to futsal – there is something for everyone! You can even find exercise opportunities that you can take part free of charge. Furthermore, Kaustinen offers great outdoor activity possibilities.

Finland provides all people with what are called Everyman’s Rights

These rights enable anyone to enjoy and roam freely in nature, regardless of who owns or holds the area. As such, within the limits of what the Everyman’s Rights permit, exercising these rights does not require a land owner’s permission and is entirely free of charge. Exercising the Everyman’s Rights must not cause more than minor harm to the land owner, land use or nature.
